Is Santorini Good for a Solo Trip?
Short answer? Absolutely!
First off, the size of the island, and it only takes to drive from one side to the other is just 45 minutes… which is great! Because it means that you’re never too far from civilization, you’re never alone, and you can see a lot of the island without losing too much time on the road!
This is at least… if you rent a car, which I highly recommend for solo travelers because it gives you complete freedom.
Now, the island itself is incredibly welcoming. The people of Santorini have built their entire lives here around hospitality, and solo travelers often tell me they’ve made friends with locals, other travelers, and even found their favorite quiet spots that aren’t in any guidebook.
Plus, there’s so much to do here! You have the sightseeing of all those beautiful villages, you have all the beaches, hikes are also a thing in Santorini, boat excursions, wine tastings, all sorts of adventure tours like horse riding or scuba diving, food tours and cooking classes, museums, archaeological sites… and even professional photo shoots!
Is Santorini Safe? Specially for Solo Female Travelers?
Okay, this is one of the most common questions I get, and I totally understand why you’d want to know this.
Here’s the truth: Santorini is remarkably safe for solo female travelers!
Greece in general has pretty low crime rates, but Santorini specifically is a small, tight-knit community where everyone knows everyone. Their entire economy depends on tourism, so there’s this collective understanding that keeping visitors safe is everyone’s priority.
The biggest “problem” you might face? Overly enthusiastic restaurant owners are trying to convince you that their moussaka is the best on the island! But that’s part of the charm, honestly.
That said, common sense applies here like it would anywhere else. Stick to well-lit areas at night, keep an eye on your belongings in crowded spots, and trust your instincts. But honestly? You’re gonna find Santorini to be one of the safest places you’ve ever traveled to.’

Getting There: Athens to Santorini
Alright, so most solo travelers start their Greek adventure in Athens, and you’re probably wondering: how do I get from Athens to Santorini?
Well, you have two options!
First, you can fly. Santorini is located in the Aegean Sea, 45 minutes from Athens by plane. It’s quick, it’s efficient, and if you snag a window seat, you’ll get some incredible views of the Greek islands from above. Perfect if you’re short on time!
Then, you have the ferry option: 5 to 8 hours, depending on which ferry you choose. Now, I know what you’re thinking, “Why would I want to spend 8 hours on a boat when I could fly in 45 minutes?“
Here’s why: approaching Santorini from the sea is absolutely magical, as you’ll watch the caldera cliffs rise dramatically from the water, and you’ll understand why this place is so special before you even step onto the island. Plus, ferries are comfortable, safe, and it’s a great way to meet other travelers!
For solo travelers specifically, I recommend the ferry because you’ve got time to relax, make some friends, and it’s part of the adventure!
Where is the Best Place for Singles in Santorini?
This is actually super important because Santorini is not just one island – it’s an archipelago, and the main island we’re focused on has very different areas with very different vibes.
Here’s what you need to know: there are the caldera cliffs, a massive 300-meter vertical wall, which is the result of the devastating volcanic eruption of 1600 BC. This means that all the villages located on the inner rim will have epic views… but also don’t have any beach access!
The main beaches are located on the other side of the island, where it’s flat, and that’s definitely something to keep in mind when you’re booking your hotel!
So, where should solo travelers stay? Let me break it down:
Fira, the capital
Fira is the capital, and it’s my top pick for solo travelers, because it’s the most centralized location, it has great public transportation connections, and it’s got the most energy. You’ll find lots of restaurants, bars, cafes, and shops.
It doesn’t have the absolute beauty of Oia, but it’s still a very impressive place to visit. What makes Fira very special, though, is that it’s located twice as high on the cliffs as Oia, which gives you epic panoramic views of the entire archipelago!
Plus, Fira has more affordable accommodation options, which brings me to my next point…
Oia village
Oia village – this is where nearly all the famous Santorini pictures you’ve seen come from. It’s without a doubt the most beautiful village of Santorini, but it’s also the most crowded! And it’s expensive. Like, really expensive. If you’re on a solo travel budget, Oia might not be the best base, but you should definitely visit!
Luckily, there are a few tricks to avoid the crowds in Oia, like going early in the morning or visiting on weekdays instead of weekends.
Other places to stay
Now, if you want something more authentic and less touristy, places like Imerovigli, Pyrgos, Megalochori, or even Emporio are absolute hidden gems! These villages give you a real taste of local life, and you’ll have a much more peaceful experience. The downside? You’ll definitely need a car or ATV to get around.
Fact: For solo travelers who want to meet people, I’d say stick to Fira. For those who want peace and quiet, go for one of the hidden gem villages!
How Many Days in Santorini is Enough?
Alright, this is a big question! How long should you stay?
Well, you have two options:
One, you have the short stay, where you do all the basics, and for that, I would say you need three days. In three days, you can see Oia, Fira, see a couple of beaches, maybe do a boat tour to the volcano, and catch at least one epic sunset.
It’s enough to say “yeah, I’ve seen Santorini!” but you’ll definitely be rushing a bit going here and there, finding places to stay, and having food.
Two, the more in-depth stay, where you’ll also do some cultural activities like archaeological sites or cooking classes, and then also some adventure stuff like kayaking or jet skiing. This will require you from five to seven days.
Here’s my honest opinion as someone who’s been there: if you’re traveling solo and you’ve come all this way, stay at least five days! Why? Because when you’re alone, you can actually take your time, you can explore at your own pace, and you don’t have to compromise with anyone else’s schedule.
You can spend a whole morning just sitting at a cafe watching the world go by. You can take that hike that everyone’s too tired to do. You can change your plans last minute because you met someone who told you about this amazing hidden beach.
That’s the beauty of solo travel – you’re on your own time!
Is Santorini Cheap or Expensive?
Okay, let’s talk about money because I know that Santorini can have the reputation of being a very expensive destination.
While it’s actually not that bad!
The official statistics say that Santorini is on average 30% cheaper than places like Paris or London, and 50% cheaper than New York! So, you see, it’s not too bad.
But it is true that if you don’t know what you’re doing, you might end up spending way more money than you should have. And this is honestly one of the main reasons why I want to help you guys not to get ripped off when you’re here in Santorini!
Here’s the reality: yes, Santorini can be expensive if you’re staying in those famous cave hotels in Oia, eating at restaurants with caldera views every night, and doing all the pricey tours.
But here’s the thing: you don’t have to do any of that!
There are plenty of affordable guesthouses and hotels, especially if you stay in Fira or the inland villages. You can eat at local tavernas instead of tourist traps – and honestly, the food is better anyway! You can rent an ATV instead of taking expensive taxis everywhere, and you can buy snacks and breakfast items from local supermarkets.
As a solo traveler, you actually have an advantage here because you’re only paying for yourself. No splitting fancy hotel rooms, no pressure to do expensive activities just because your travel partner wants to.
My advice? Splurge on one or two special experiences, maybe that boat tour or a really nice dinner, and save money on the rest. That way, you get the best of both worlds!
What is the Cheapest Month to Go to Santorini?
Alright, so when should you come if you want to save money?
Here’s the deal: Santorini’s peak season is June through September, with July and August being absolute madness – crowded, hot, and expensive!
If you want the cheapest prices, come in November through March. Hotels drop their prices significantly, flights are cheaper, and you’ll have the island practically to yourself.
The downside? Some restaurants and hotels close for the winter, the weather can be unpredictable, and the sea is too cold for swimming.
My recommendation for solo travelers? Come in May or October!
These shoulder season months give you the best of both worlds: the weather is still beautiful, most places are open, you’ll avoid the massive crowds, and prices are much more reasonable than peak summer.
Plus, when it’s less crowded, it’s actually easier to meet people and have meaningful interactions with locals, as it is not as stressful and rushed as we are in July and August!
October is especially great because the sea is still warm from the summer sun, the sunsets are incredible, and you’ll get that special and unique Santorini experience without fighting through crowds in Oia.
Which Part of Greece is Best for Solo Travel?
Okay, so maybe you’re wondering, is Santorini the best choice for solo travel in Greece, or should I go somewhere else?
Santorini is incredible for solo travelers because it’s compact, safe, easy to move around, and absolutely stunning. You can’t take a bad photo here! The downside? It’s definitely touristy, and during peak season, you might feel like you’re at Disneyland sometimes.
If you want more authentic Greek culture and don’t care as much about Instagram-perfect views, places like Crete, Naxos, or Paros might be better options. They’re bigger, less expensive, and have more locals than tourists.
Athens is also fantastic for solo travelers, great for history buffs, has an amazing food scene, and is easy to meet other travelers in the many hostels and walking tours.
But here’s what I tell people: if you’ve come all the way to Greece, you should at least spend a few days in Santorini! The caldera, the sunsets, the volcanic beaches, the wine – there’s truly nothing else like it in the world.
You can always combine Santorini with other islands. Many solo travelers I meet do Athens for a few days, then island hop to Santorini and maybe one or two other islands. That way, you get the famous views and the authentic Greek experience!
Final Tips for Your Solo Santorini Adventure
Alright, before I let you go, here are some final tips that I wish every solo traveler knew before coming here:
Rent a car or ATV – seriously, this gives you so much freedom! Public buses exist but they’re not super reliable, and taxis are expensive. When you have your own wheels, you can explore those hidden beaches and villages that most tourists never see.
Don’t try to do everything – I know I gave you a huge list of activities earlier, but don’t overwhelm yourself! This isn’t a race. Pick a few things that really excite you and leave room for spontaneity.
Wake up early – I can’t stress this enough! Early morning in Santorini is absolutely magical. The light is incredible, the villages are empty, and you’ll have those famous spots all to yourself. Plus, you’ll avoid the heat!
Join a group tour or two – even if you’re traveling solo, joining a boat tour or wine tasting is a great way to meet other travelers. Some of my solo clients have made lifelong friends on these tours!
Talk to locals – we love sharing our island with genuinely interested people! Ask your hotel owner for recommendations, chat with the lady at the bakery, and strike up a conversation with your waiter. You’ll get insider tips that no guidebook can give you.
Don’t stress about being alone – I’ve seen so many solo travelers worry about eating alone or looking awkward at sunset spots. Trust me, nobody cares! Half the people here are so focused on getting that perfect photo, they won’t even notice you. And eating alone means you can order whatever you want without judgment.
There’s something about Santorini, maybe it’s the dramatic cliffs, maybe it’s the endless blue of the Aegean, or maybe it’s just the energy of this place, that makes you feel alive and present.
You’re gonna have an amazing time! Just remember: stay safe, be smart with your money, take your time, and don’t be afraid to talk to people.
